Cooperative Projects
KHLT cooperated with other entities in protecting the following lands:
275 acres along Diamond Creek in the Baycrest area, purchased from the University of Alaska by Kachemak Heritage Land Trust through a capital campaign. KHLT then donated the land to the City of Homer, to preserve forestland and the extensive ski and hiking trail system. Trails are maintained by Kachemak Nordic Ski Club and Homer Soil and Water Conservation District.
Approximately 57 acres at the mouth of the Anchor River, purchased by The Nature Conservancy with funds from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council, and Ducks Unlimited, along with substantial private donations obtained through a sustained campaign by Kachemak Heritage Land Trust. 166.2 acres on the Homer Spit and in nearby Beluga Slough, preserved in cooperation with the City of Homer and the Trust for Public Land, through acquisition by the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustees Council. These sites provide especially important habitat for marine invertebrates, and for migratory shorebirds and waterfowl. Related story
90 acres known as Overlook Park below Homer’s Baycrest scenic overlook, acquired by the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council and maintained as part of the Kachemak Bay State Park system.
16.74 acres in the Beluga Wetlands and 12 acres on the lower Anchor River, purchased by Kachemak Moose Habitat, Inc., using funds from the North American Wetlands Conservation Act small grants program. Related stories
60 acres donated by Edmund Schuster to Alaska State Parks, forming the Eveline State Recreation Site off East End Road near McNeil Canyon. Kachemak Nordic Ski Club manages trails on the property.
