The days are getting warmer and longer, which means monitoring season is here!
Each year, KHLT conducts monitoring on more than 40 properties totaling over 3,000 acres. That's a lot to do in a short amount of time and we could really use your help! Monitoring is an easy and fun way to get out and explore while supporting conservation - no training required! Awesome!
On a typical monitoring outing, we walk the boundaries of the property and check areas of interest - observing while taking notes and photos at designated points along the way. We also note any changes using photos from previous visits.
The monitoring season typically runs from late May-November and field outings last 3-8 hours depending on the property. We go out frequently (1-2 times a week) and in all types of weather in order to finish before winter.
We're always looking for people to join in and help us! If you think you might be interested or have any questions, please contact our Stewardship Coordinator, Courtney.
Local Homer artist Hailey Smith has designed a new logo for KHLT - it's beautiful! Stay tuned for updated materials and later this summer, a new website!
There's still time! We're waiting on the spruce tips, so the contest has been extended to June 1st!
Kenai River Brewing Co has generously offered to brew a beer supporting KHLT – donating a portion of the beer sales to our important conservation organization. How fantastic is that?! Monies raised will help fund KHLT’s annual stewardship responsibilities; stewarding irreplaceable lands under our care from the head of Kachemak Bay to the Kenai River. KHLT is part of the amazing long-term, large landscape Mountains to Sea Partnership. This important collaboration is where multiple organizations, such as U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, Kenai Watershed Forum, Cook Inletkeeper, and many others, are working to connect already protected salmon streams from the headwaters in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge to the ocean.
